Parting With a Favorite Animal

Most of us who raise cattle do it because we like the animals and enjoy working with them. Our lives are richer for having known them, which makes it difficult to sell or butcher ones we get attached to. Yet, parting with them is a necessary aspect of the whole experience.

Parting with livestock can be both a challenging and necessary aspect of being involved in agriculture and animal husbandry. Whether it’s selling or saying goodbye to them for other reasons, such as butchering for food, it often involves a mix of emotions.

For us, our livestock can become like family. We spend months building a relationship with each cow that comes to LAAN Limousin Ranch. We give them names, watch them grow, and help them welcome their babies into the world. It’s the early mornings, late nights, and long days that allow us to get to know their individual personalities.

However, the realities of ranching sometimes require parting ways with livestock. It could be for financial reasons, to maintain herd size, or to ensure the overall well-being and productivity of the remaining animals. It may also involve making tough decisions regarding the sustainability and profitability of the farm.

Parting with livestock serves as a reminder of the cycle of life and the interdependence between humans and animals. And, just like a break-up, there is sadness when it is time to say goodbye. But, whether we are selling or sending to them to butcher, our time with each animal teaches us just how valuable life really is.
