Ohh the places we’ll go…
In the short time we’ve owned the ranch, we have become four novice ranch hands led by one trained rancher. In the beginning, we were fortunate to have some of grampa’s oversight. When he passed, we tried to learn all we could from the ranching family who leased our fields. Today, we are on our own, and each day is a new life lesson.
When purchasing this land, we always intended to run cattle on it. And just as fast as we could buy a handful of cows, they have grown to herd of almost 20 head – with more calves expected in the spring.

A fast-growing herd means we have to learn on our feet. From how to move cattle to how to identify and treat illnesses, we have seen a lot. Living on the ranch, we have learned that life is as predictable as the changing of the seasons, and no matter the season there is always something that needs to be tended to.
The cattle have a lot to teach us. The more we learn from and about them, the faster we become better at caring for them. By no means is this life easy. We have long days, hard days, frustrating and even disappointing days. But rough days means we are still learning and prepares us for the next challenge.
By no means are we experts, but each passing day takes us further from transplanted city people to full-fledge ranchers.
