Farm Journal, Day 1718

Spring Calves are Bred in June

This past spring we welcomed two new calves to the LAAN Limousin herd – Lil’ Lou and Lucius. To stay on schedule and get ready for the next group of spring calves, we will rebreed in early June.

Same as the fall breeding schedule, we observe an approximately 45-day breeding schedule. This helps us pin-point when to expect new calves and helps identify our best producing cows. Our herd is small and unless we win the lottery (or are gifted large sums of money), the best way to grow our herd is through a sound breeding program.

Our spring-calving herd consists of two commercial cows and one registered Limousin female. Cattle can either be pedigree documented or a cross between different breeds, generally without any type of documented pedigree. Think purebred poodle and a mutt. A registered animal is typically raised to produce breeding stock for other purebred producers.

Once established, we hope to have a herd that consists completely of registered cattle. In the meantime, we have can profit from these two commercial cows in multiple ways:

  • Sell their offspring and use the profits to purchase registered replacement cows
  • Raise their offspring for beef sales (or to stock our own freezer)
  • Invest in a registered embryo and use them as surrogates mothers

This breeding cycle, we will breed our commercial cows with 603J – Jukebox. For our registered cow, we will use artificial insemination to introduce new genetics into our herd.

Stay tuned for future introductions and new faces in the LAAN Limousin herd.
