Farm Journal, Day 1345

If you leave here hungry, that’s your own damn fault.

My husband

One thing you can count on when you visit LAAN Limousin Cattle is that we won’t let you leave hungry. My husband is an amazing cook, with a specialty in grilling.

Since moving to our ranch, we have access to an abundance of food that we grow or raise directly on our property. To say we eat well would be an understatement.

In addition to cattle, we raise pigs and chickens; and, we have our annual garden. We do our best to harvest everything we grow and waste little.

Chickens, eggs, and more eggs

On average, one chicken will lay five to six eggs a week – we have nine chickens. When the weather is warm and the days get long, every chicken in the coop will lay an egg. For our readers who are good with math, you know we’re getting about 84,000 eggs a day! Ok, math is not one of my strengths. But, it sure feels like we’re bringing in thousands of eggs a day.

When we had out-of-town guests visiting for high school graduation. We had 9 extra mouths to feed and not a single person left the breakfast table hungry, thanks to our ladies in the coop. But, when we don’t have extra mouths to eat the eggs, sometimes we have more than we know what to do with.

Canning, freezing, pickling

We weren’t as lucky this year as we were in year’s past with canning. Unprecedented heat waves and a drought year had a terrible impact on our cucumbers, zucchinis, green beans, and tomatoes. I am so thankful we don’t live in a time where our winter health depends on our summer crop. Each garden season we learn something new. I am excited to try again next year – and, maybe introduce a greenhouse to our rotation?
