Farm Journal, Day 1346 and 47 and 48

“We been through every kind of rain there is. Little bitty stinging rain, big ol’ fat rain…Rain that flew in sideways. And sometimes rain even seemed to come straight up from underneath. Shoot, it even rained at night.

Forrest Gump, 1994

Rainy days on the ranch mean not much can get done outside. The garden isn’t weeded. The fields aren’t brush hogged. Fence rows are neglected. Mud is tracked into the chicken house. Cows hide in the trees, making it extra difficult to check that everyone is accounted for.

This past week brought a whole lot of camping indoors and not a lot of farm adventures. Don’t get me wrong, we are thankful for the rain and that we don’t live in a region where rain is scarce (and getting scarcer). Without the rain, the grass wouldn’t grow and the cows would be hungry. Without the rain, the trees would be thirsty and the overwhelming hug of a green that surrounds our property would be brown and dull.

It’s difficult to find inspiration when we are stuck indoors for so many days. But, don’t fret! The sun will come out, warm days will keep us outside, and before we know it, calving season will be upon us once again.

For fun, check out this blog that gives lots of fun activities to do on the farm, ranch, homestead when it rains!
