Farm Journal, Day 1000-ish

We became official today. We named the ranch, picked a herd prefix, and have calves of own.

Sometimes life on the ranch is a little too busy. Between checking the chickens, feeding the pigs, filling the hardy heater, weeding the garden, moving the cows, and all the other chores that pop up, it is real easy to lose track of the days. For this entry, I must have lost count, but on day 1000-ish, we reached an exciting milestone. We named the ranch, picked a herd prefix, and had a couple of calves of our own.

When it comes to names, no matter what you’re naming, you have to get it right. With the birth of our own calves, we could no longer refer to the property as Melissa Leslie Estates. That no longer fit the limousin theme. We also didn’t feel right picking up Brown’s Limousin. However, thanks to the advice of our extended family, we decided to go with something that embraced our future.

So, why LAAN? We took the first letter of our last name and the first letter of each of our kids’ names. Honoring family but also the future our children will have.

Once we had a name for the ranch, that meant we had to pick a herd prefix. A Herd Prefix is typically short, and might include your last name, initials, farm name or an abbreviation of that name. We initially requested LAAN, but that was already taken – so, we had to get creative. Embracing our city roots and our gaming past time, we then requested NOOB. Guess what, that wasn’t taken! And this couldn’t be more fitting. A noob is a person who is inexperienced in a particular sphere or activity.

We aren’t as inexperienced as we were last year, which is good. We have entered a field that takes a lifetime to learn and even then you still aren’t an expert. I couldn’t imagine being on any other journey.
