Farm Journal, Day 360

Umm… what do I do about this?

I have it on good authority that, according to the folks who share our fence line, these things are “good eating.” I, however, as a transplanted city girl will have to take their word for it. I draw the line at rodents of unusual size as nourishment.

I managed to scare him away before a dog or man with a .22 got him. Since this day I have scared other groundhogs, opossums, turkeys, and Guinea fowl off the porch. In fact, I now have house rules about what can and cannot be done from the porch. Specifically, during hunting season, there is no shooting firearms from the porch – which means I spend November scaring hunters off the porch!

Living in the country, we’re surrounded by beauty and wild life. Whether it’s a groundhog on my porch, bald eagle in the old Oak tree, or a deer and her fawn crossing our road, I’m always in awe of our animal neighbors.

And, if you’re interested, you can find a recipe for groundhog here. Again. I draw the line at rodent for nourishment.
