Farm Journal, Day 365

One year after we started this crazy adventure I looked back at all that we, mostly Tom, accomplished. We cleaned up fields, re-fenced most of the 46 acres, bought pigs (and were patiently awaiting our first litter of piglets), raised chickens and two turkeys (including one jerk rooster), raised two ducks (who have since moved on to bigger ponds), and bought a tractor!

Today, almost 1000 farm journal days later, we are still patiently awaiting that first litter of piglets. Notorious PIG and Starlight were not the match made in heaven we thought they would be. Instead we buy feeder pigs from neighboring farms and are focusing our efforts on building our Limousin herd. We still raise chickens and are excited to learn new ways to preserve the extra eggs we cannot eat. This week we are going to try pickling them. This is a recipe the kids and Tom like, I am still warming up to it.

One thing we have become pretty successful at is gardening. We have staked off a pretty big portion of the yard near the house for a vegetable garden. We have also started to enjoy preserving the food we grow.

That first year was a busy year, as have been the years since. But, I couldn’t imagine living any other life!
