Lost two chicks. Had to clean poo off the bottoms of two other chicks. Found a cat in my kitchen vent… just a normal day.

One of our first adventures building our little ranch was a “Surprise Box” from the Cackle Hatchery. Our surprise box had 37 chicks of various breeds, one turkey, and two ducklings (who identified as chickens).
Raising chicks isn’t difficult. But, if you haven’t done it before, sometimes you have to clean caked up poo off their bottoms.
On this day, we lost two of our chicks (which is normal, especially when you have so many) and were cleaning two others when we heard “MEW” coming from the kitchen vent. Upon further inspection we found one of the kittens my daughter brought home in the vent! For those that are counting, that is two barnyard animals and a mostly feral kitten, in my kitchen…
Needless to say, once the chicks were clean and secure, we were off to the next unexpected chore – figuring out how the cat got into the vents!
Grampa Brown told me I would “get used to it after a while.” He’s right. Life is rarely dull on the ranch – but you get used to the excitement that each day brings.
If you are interested in raising chicks or adding to your coop, check out the Cackle Hatchery. They are the place to go for chicks!
